The Department of Transfusion Medicine is a vital support service that adequately provides for the ever increasing and exacting haemotherapy requirements of cancer patients. The Blood Bank was redesigned as the Department of Transfusion Medicine in 1994 with state-of-the-art facilities to provide blood transfusion services and train medical and paramedical personnel in related areas. The department has a multidisciplinary team comprising physicians, scientists, technologists, medical social workers and support staff providing transfusion services round the clock to patients. The various sections in the Department include Donor Services, Blood Component Laboratory, Red Cell Serology Laboratory, Transfusion Transmitted Infection Screening Laboratory, HLA laboratory and Quality Control Laboratory. Recognised as a premier blood centre, the department offers assistance to other blood banks in the country for training and education and in solving technical and administrative problems.

The Department is affiliated to the Homi Bhabha National Institute (Deemed University) and offers a postgraduate course in MD (Immunohematology & Blood Transfusion). There are three recognised teachers in the Department. The faculty  holds positions in key decision making bodies for Transfusion Services such as  State Blood Transfusion Council (SBTC), the National Accreditation Board for Hospitals and Healthcare Providers (NABH) and Federation of Bombay Blood Banks (FBBB). Committed to promote the highest standard of care for the patient and donors the Department of Transfusion Medicine strives to provide adequate quantity of safe and quality blood to all beneficiaries.

Department staff are highly skilled team of medical professionals, scientists, technicians, medical social workers and supportive staff.

The various blood components processed include packed red blood cells, fresh frozen plasma (FFP), cryoprecipitate, random donor platelet concentrates, apheresis platelets and saline washed red cells. To ensure adequate supply of components the centre depends largely on purely voluntary donors. Outdoor blood donation camps are conducted at various educational and industrial institutions. Platelet donor recruitment drives are conducted to augment availability of apheresis platelets. Every year the department collects approximately 18,000 blood units and 5000 apheresis platelets.

HLA & Immunogenetics laboratory deals with Transplant diagnostics mainly HLA typing using both low resolution PCR-SSP, PCR-SSO and high resolution sequence based typing (SBT) for identifying donors for hematopoietic stem cell transplantation for various hematological malignancies. In addition to HLA genotyping the laboratory is involved in screening of alloimmunization using panel reactive antibodies, donor specific antibodies in partially mismatched/haploidentical allogeneic donor recipient pairs.

Besides the three years postgraduate course in MD (Immunohematology & Blood Transfusion) under the Homi Bhabha National Institute (Deemed University) the Department also conducts training courses in Blood Banking on behalf of NACO, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India for Medical Officers, Nurses and Technicians working in the blood bank.

Opportunities are also available for being an observer in the Department including specialized areas such as component processing and apheresis.

Department of Transfusion Medicine participates in various research activities related to clinical transfusion practices, blood components and immunohematology, HLA & Immunogenetics with publications in National and International journals.

Information for Blood and Platelet Donors

Blood and platelet  donation is a ‘Gift of Life’ that healthy individuals can give to fellow human beings who require blood or platelet transfusions.   Donating blood is simple and safe and a rewarding experience that usually takes 45-60 minutes.

Whole Blood Donation:   Blood donation can be done at an outdoor blood donation camp or in Department of Transfusion Medicine, Tata Memorial Hospital.  Blood donation process includes brief medical examination and time for refreshments.  A healthy individual can donate blood at the interval of 3 months.

Platelet Donation:  Platelets, the cellular part of blood are separated with the help of a special machine called Cell Separator.  The remaining portion of blood i.e., red cells and plasma is returned to donor.  Platelet donation takes approximately 60-75 minutes and  can be done at Department of Transfusion Medicine, Tata Memorial Hospital.

Timing for donation:  9.30 a.m. to 4.45 p.m.   Contact:  022-24177000 Ext. 4681/4682

Tata Memorial Hospital also conducts outdoor blood donation drives at your door step (Residential areas, colleges, corporate office etc.)  A group of people, willing to come together for this noble cause by arranging blood donation camp, may please contact Medical Social Worker on 022-24177000, ext. 4682 between 9.30 a.m. to 5.30 p.m.
