The division of Clinical Biochemistry is the integral bridge between patients and Clinicians. It aims to understand and explain pathology at a biochemical level and develop new strategies for diagnosis and follow-up of patients by biochemical testing.

Key to the successful processing for large daily volume of samples is high throughput analyzers allowing uninterrupted delivery of vital patient services. To ensure the highest standard of work we  participate in Internal Quality assurance and external quality assurance schemes. The department continued to be accreditated by NABL.

The testing results are used for clinical management of our patients. Critical alert values and sample rejections are automatic and conveyed to patients via sms on phone call Highly trained technologists perform the tests with state of art automated analyzers (necessary to provide accurate test results) such as Beckman coulter AU 680, AU5811, Abbott Architect i2000,  automated protein electrophoresis analyzers and Image 800, most of analyzers are interfaced with the HIS online for fast report generation and. In addition the lab support research and development of tests, and educational development of employees. The section also provides laboratory support to other clinical divisions for research protocol. The Department of Biochemistry is accredited by NABL under the ISO 15189 guidelines in the year November, 2005.

The major core lab has an extensive chemistry test menu of approximately 135 different assays available on major sample types ( serum/plasma, urine, CSF and body fluids). Services provided to patients include biochemical tests, tumor markers, protein electrophoresis, vitamins, hormones and drugs. Department provides 35 lacs investigations to 4 lac patients annually which includes biochemistry, tumor marker, as well as Vitamins and hormones. Samples reach the department through Pneumatic chute and processed through Diagnostic Information system. Reports are directly transferred from instrument to the DIS and thus reduces turnaround time. Turn around time for Biochemistry and tumor markers is 5 hours, for emergency Biochemical test is 2 hours.

Tumor marker assays and serum protein Electrophoresis forms an important part of department and has attained the status as national reference center for marker assays Electrophoresis, Immunofixation, Immunoglobulin and free light chains Kappa and Lambda estimation are routinely performed for many institutions other than TMH.

Department provides 24X7 operational support by offering comprehensive biochemical services  and strive to maintain the highest standard of laboratory practices and provide timely and reliable reports.

Total number of tests done in biochemistry laboratory in the year 2016 & 2017

The department offered 33,60,366 biochemical test service to 3,91,853 patients And 2,24,449 Tumor marker tests and electrophoresis services to 93,806 patients in 2017. There is 22.96% increase in Biochemistry and 19.87% increase in Tumor markers workload.

Education and courses :

M.Sc in Biochemistry by research

Advance Clinical Biochemistry training course (conducted twice in a year. A 6 months course with 6 month internship).

MD pathology students are trained for Biochemistry and exams are conducted by the department.

Staff attends training courses, conferences and seminars on regular basis. In-house proficiency test is taken for all the staff.

Candidates who wish to join us as an observer should write to The Dean, PG Studies, TMH with a brief bio-data.

Research activities:

The laboratory research includes Clinical trials with regular publications in national journals. Departmental participation in conferences and continuing medical education programs is also encouraged, thereby fostering greater awareness levels among staff.

Department has participated in external quality control program  conducted by Bi-Rad for Clinical Biochemistry, urine chemistry, glycosylated haemoglobin, therapeutic drug monitoring and immunoassay with a very good accuracy score.
