"Department of Preventive Oncology"

Dr. Sharmila Pimple : Professor and Physician

Dr. Gauravi Mishra : Professor and Physician

Dr. Subita Patil : Associate Professor & Physician

Since its establishment in 1997, the Department of Preventive Oncology has been actively engaged in Health Promotion, Cancer Control, Prevention, Screening and Early Detection. Recognized as a WHO Collaborating Centre for Cancer Prevention, Screening and Early Detection since 2002, the department plays a crucial role in combating cancer. It is estimated that over 40% of cancer-related deaths could be prevented by addressing modifiable risk factors such as smoking, alcohol use, poor diet and physical inactivity. Additionally, routine screening, early detection, and treatment have the potential to prevent nearly one-third of all cancer deaths. Unfortunately, low-to-middle income countries bear the brunt, accounting for 70% of cancer-related deaths. By implementing appropriate prevention, early detection and treatment strategies, millions of lives could be saved each year.

Located on the 3rd floor of the Service Block, the department provides comprehensive services through its six major mandates stated below.

Goals and Objectives of the Department of Preventive Oncology include these six main mandates & thrust areas.

6. Advocacy, NGO-Training and Networking:

The cancer screening clinic, wherein cancer education is imparted and screening for common cancers mainly Breast, Uterine Cervix, and Oral Cavity Cancers is undertaken for all individuals. In addition, for high risk/ symptomatic patients screening for additional specific cancer siteis also undertaken. Anyone seeking screening services can visit the screening clinic with or without prior appointment during the scheduled OPD timings from Monday to Saturday. Furthermore, the department runs a Tobacco Cessation Clinic, wherein trained Counsellors assist patients in overcoming tobacco addiction. Through collaborations with various NGOs and Organizations, the department advocates for tobacco control and cessation, aiming to reduce the prevalence of tobacco use and subsequently lower the incidence of oral cavity cancers caused by its consumption.

Since its inception, the department has been actively involved in delivering outreach services in both urban and rural areas. It also engages in cancer control activities in the Raigad, Ratnagiri, Palghar and Gadchiroli districts of Maharashtra. In 2022, a rural spoke of the department was established in Khopoli, providing preventive services through clinics and camps. Additionally, the department provides training to staff involved in various projects and research activities. It has a long-standing commitment to educating the general public, students, academicians, and clinicians. Collaborating with the Department of Health, Government of Maharashtra, the department offers training to medical officers, staff nurses and other paramedic personnel from different districts of Maharashtra.

To support its educational and awareness initiatives, the department has a diverse range of educational materials, including audio-visual aids, which effectively disseminate information to the masses. Various educational activities are organized within Tata Memorial Hospital and other areas as needed. Workshops, seminars and CMEs (Continuing Medical Education) are conducted for Medical students and paramedical staff, while regular academic activities ensure knowledge upgradation. The department also conducts community and hospital-based research on various cancer related issues in collaboration with national and international agencies. It consistently secures intramural and extramural funds for its projects and shares the knowledge gained through regular publications in reputable journals, thereby benefiting the Indian and global academic community.

Department of Preventive Oncology, housed on the third floor of the 'Service Block',offers the following services: -

  • Health education on Cancer prevention and early detection
  • Cancer Screening & Follow-up clinics
  • Health Manpower Training and Development in Preventive Oncology
  • Technical Advice for establishing Preventive Oncology activities
  • Scientific research Projects
  • Special Focus Programme

Cost-effective efficacious cervical cancer screening using VIA test

Cervical cancer screening by "visual inspection with acetic acid (VIA)" test is now proven to be effective in reducing cervical cancer mortality and may be used as a cost-effective method for cervical cancer control, particularly in resource constrained settings. The VIA manual prepared by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC),is being used by the department of preventive oncology for training primary health workers to provide VIA screening.
The manual is available in public domain and may be downloaded from the following link:
http://screening.iarc.fr/doc/viavilimanual.pdf. Printed copies may be purchased form the IARC press if needed.

Special Focus Programmes

All educational activities should succeed into a change in attitudes and practices. This sometimes and especially in our context requires repeated and attractive messaging followed up with screening services. Department of Preventive Oncology participates enthusiastically with the community in providing cancer awareness through unique special focus programmes targeting the three common cancers i.e. Cervical cancer, Breast cancer, and Tobacco related cancers, particularly Head and Neck Cancers. The months of March, June and October each year are devoted for special focus programs. March is the month for Cervix Cancer Awareness. The department uses the popular platform of the InternationaI Women's Day, 8th March to conduct special awareness campaigns on Women's cancers with special emphasis on Cervix Cancers throughout the month of March. It also offers free check-up for women during this month.

Tobacco related cancers are targeted from the 31st of May (World No Tobacco Day) and continue throughout June. Several activities informing the lay public the ill effects of tobacco are conducted during this month. The department also offers free checkup for tobacco users in the month of June each year. 9th October being International Breast Cancer Awareness Day, the department conducts Breast Cancer Awareness Campaigns. October is designated as Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Tata Memorial Hospital has been doing yeoman service for the past six decades and is the most updated Cancer Centre in the Indian Subcontinent. Since the focus worldwide is shifting to prevention and early detection, the Tata Memorial Hospital is now also geared up to provide the same level and quality of services through the Department of Preventive Oncology. Committed to providing much needed information to the public on how to prevent and detect cancer at an early stage as well as the management of Pre-cancerous conditions, the Department of Preventive Oncology remains a pioneer in the field of cancer prevention in the country.
