Department of Dental and Prosthetic Surgery caters to special dental needs of cancer patients. The department also carries out rehabilitation of head and neck cancer patients with obturators, guide plane prostheses, tongue prostheses etc. after ablative surgery. Implant retained maxillofacial prostheses (intra-oral & extra-oral) are also fabricated in patients requiring this modality of treatment.

Department of Dental and Prosthetic renders the following services:

  • Intra oral Prosthetic rehabilitation for cancer patients (Obturators, Bite Guide prosthesis, Tongue prosthesis, Palatal prosthesis, Dentures etc.)
  • Extra Oral Prosthesis (Ear Nose, Orbit and Facial patch)
  • Surgical insertion of implants and Implant retained prosthetic rehabilitation.
  • Dental oncology for patients undergoing radiotherapy and chemotherapy.

 

The Department of Dental and Prosthetic Surgery along with the International Society for Maxillofacial Rehabilitation organized for the first time in India a Continuing Education Workshop solely dedicated to the specialty of Maxillofacial Prosthodontics. 145 delegates from all over India participated in the three days training program which included lectures, clinical / laboratory demonstrations and case discussions by world renowned Prosthodontics from the USA, the Netherlands, Italy and Singapore.

Department of Dental and prosthetic surgery is located in Homi Bhabha Block 2nd floor Room no 217 and in Golden Jubilee building 1st floor room number 130.

Common prosthesis fabricated after surgical treatment of oral cancer

Obturator: A plate like appliance given after upper jaw resection.

Bite Guide Prosthesis: A device given after lower jaw surgery to correct the alignment of upper and lower jaw and to keep the teeth in occlusion.

Tongue Prosthesis and Palatal Augmentation Prosthesis: These special prostheses are given to improve swallowing and speech in cases of tongue surgery (glossectomy).

Extra Oral Prosthesis: Specialized silicone prosthesis are made for patients with facial defects. Commonly fabricated extra oral prosthesis are orbital (artificial eye), nose, auricular (artificial ear) and finger prosthesis.

Implant retained intra oral and Extra oral maxillofacial prosthesis

Current areas of research related to dental implants, quality of life, intraoral prosthesis and extra oral prosthesis, medicine related osteonecrosis of jaw.

The Department is also involved in some multi-centric studies with eminent national and international institutes.
