The pathology department of Tata Memorial hospital is the quintessence of pathology services which are essential in any Oncology center. The department was built on the shoulders of giants and stalwarts with a bedrock principle of patient care. The department is an amalgamation of Surgical Pathology (8th floor), Molecular Pathology (7th floor) and Cytopathology (5th floor).Together the medical workforce comprises of 21 consultant pathologists.

All the laboratories have been accredited by National Accreditation Board for Testing & Calibration Laboratories (NABL).

Surgical pathology

Offering quality service is the motto of TMH. The department of Surgical Pathology is sprawled across the 8th floor and designed to harmonize the surgical pathology workflow. It provides quality diagnostic services in Frozen section, small biopsies including bone marrow biopsies, large resections and exenterations for in-house patients as well as referrals.Automation is at the heart of surgical Pathology.

Frozen section

Rapid frozen section (FS) diagnosis is the corner stone in the elective management of numerous cancers and oncological emergencies. The FS is located on the second floor in the OT complex of main building.

Grossing and Tissue Processing

The Department of Pathology receives approximately 65000 samples annually which roughlyinclude9000 resection specimens, around 29000 small biopsies, and the rest are referral specimens from all over the Indian subcontinent.

Immunohistochemistry

Immunohistochemistry (IHC) is paramount and inherent for diagnosis in surgical oncopathology. The IHC lab was set up in the year 1985with a manual staining protocol. Full automation of IHC was introduced in the year 2012. We provide whole range of diagnostic and theranostic markers which are intrinsic to the management of cancer.

Web based synoptic reporting

In the year 2003, the diagnostic information system was introduced which was then linked to the electronic medical record (EMR) in the year 2007. However, there was an unmet need to capture information directly from reports and transfer it to the search engine. With this in mind, the concept of web based synoptic reporting system was introduced for routine workflow in April 2018 with backend automated mapping of diagnostic and descriptive terminologies used in the pathology report to ICD-O3.2, SNOMEDCT-International Edition and ICD10CM coding systems. These coding systems are adapted to pathology report generation requirements and periodically updated.

Digital pathology

The department pioneered Digital Pathology in India with 1st generation static telepathology in the year 2000 and embraced advanced technology of whole slide imaging (WSI) in the year 2018. The COVID19 pandemic entailed curtailment of workforce not only due to the lockdown but also due to quarantine/isolation measures. As a result, our department undertook the task of validating Digital Pathology (DP) for remote reporting from home by WSI. The department has not only published a seminal international original article on the same but has commenced DP as a part of routine primary reporting. The department has been usingDP for a range of applications viz. second opinion, education, quality assurance, multidisciplinary meetings and computational pathology/artificial intelligence.

Molecular Pathology

The divisionof molecular pathologyis integrated with the division of surgical pathology. The molecular pathology division was established in the year 2004. It is committed for performing and delivering high quality molecular analysis of various solid tumors that can be used for diagnosis, treatment and prognostication of tumors, thus providing a direction for offering personalized cancer treatment to improve outcomes. The laboratory strives forcontinual improvement of its existing techniques viz. PCR to NGS, to improvise sensitivity and scope of molecular diagnostics assays. The laboratory has been offering clinically relevant, targeted therapy based molecular diagnostic assays as per the national and international guidelines using PCR, FISH, Sanger sequencing, MLPA, Gene expression analysis, Realtime PCR and next generation sequencing based tests. All the molecular diagnostic tests are performed as per the NABL norms. The laboratory also participates in the College of American Pathologists (CAP) Proficiency Testing as part of the external quality assurance program. Trend analysis for the routine diagnostic tests is performed on monthly basis.During the peak pandemic situation, the lab promptly provided COVID-19 RT-PCR testing on a regular basis round the clock and is still continuing to provide the same.

Referral services

The department also provides diagnostic and theranostic services to patients who are not registered as “in-patients” in TMH. The referral material is labeled as “out-out”. They are registered as a unique “out-out” case number, following which it undergoes processing identical to in-house samples.

The material has to be sent and addressed to Department of Pathology (8th floor Annex building) with pertinent and relevant details viz. patient's name, age, sex, address, telephone number and e-mail address together with the clinical history, imaging, site of biopsy and the pathology report of the referring laboratory (if any).

The payment options include demand draft as well as online payment. The following contact information is provided to obtain details of the referral services.

Workshops /CMEs /Conferences / Meetings

Department of Pathology, Tata Memorial Centre, Mumbai regularly conducts workshop on grossing techniques and minimal dataset reporting, Slide seminars, guest lectures of national and international eminent faculty, CMEs and conferences on the topics of various histopathology specialties, gets an overwhelming response from the pathologists across the country.

Hands on Workshop on Immunohistochemistry techniques and CME on histotechnology is held every year especially for the benefit of the histotechnologists of the country.

Department of Pathology also participates in Hospital Clinical Meetings conducted every Thursday, at the Tata Memorial Hospital by participation in Grand Rounds, Landmark Papers and Mortality meetings

Observership in Pathology

Post MD Pathologist can apply for the observership through an online application https://tmc.gov.in/m_trainee_new The candidate will be informed regarding the observership through an e mail by “Observers’ Cell” of the hospital.

Training Programs in Pathology

Six months certified paid Oncopathology Training program is conducted in the months of March and September every year. Two post MD pathologists are selected every six months on the basis of merit. Online applications are invited from national and international candidates approximately 3 months prior to the commencement of the course on the website https://tmc.gov.in/m_events/events/trainings

UICC Fellowship in Pathology

The Professional Education division of the Tata Memorial Centre is designated by the UICC (International Union Against Cancer) as the coordination centre for professional education in cancer for the Asia-Pacific regions. The TMH, therefore, acts as a catalyst in Professional Cancer Education for disseminating knowledge and expertise across the country. It supports 2 trainees in Oncopathology every year for a period of 2 months each from its own funds.

Online applications from the post MD candidates are invited prior to the commencement of the course on the website https://tmc.gov.in/m_events/events/trainings

Selection of the candidate is based on the merit.

Over 9800interesting and teaching slides are cataloguedsubspeciality wise for the post graduate students, observers and trainees of the pathology department.
