About us
Cancer is considered a systemic disease, so most patients registered at HBCH&RC, Muzaffarpur are seen by the Department of Medical Oncology, which deals with systemic therapies such as chemotherapy. The department is committed to providing efficient care and insights into research for both adult and pediatric cancer patients.

He has completed his MD from VMMC and Safdarjung Hospital, New Delhi and DM in Medical oncology from Tata Memorial Hospital, Mumbai. Dr Gunjesh has a vast experience in the field of oncology including adult solid (breast, lung, head and neck, gastrointestinal, gynecological, urogenital and bone/soft tissue) malignancies, as well as adult hematological cancers. He provides specialized and multidisciplinary approach for the treatment of aforesaid cancers. The lines of treatment include chemotherapy, hormone therapy, immunotherapy, targeted therapy and monoclonal antibody therapy
He has multiple publications in various international and Indian indexed journals. Dr Gunjesh has also presented his award-winning researches in various international platforms such as American society of clinical oncology (ASCO) and European society for medical oncology (ESMO).
He has been awarded with Dr Kalla Venkat Young Researcher award by Indian society of Medical and Pediatric Oncology (ISMPO) in 2019.

The department provides clinical care for different sub specialties like Head & Neck, Gastrointestinal, Breast, Bone & Soft tissue, Urology and Gynecologic Oncology. Every aspect of the department is designed to prioritize the well-being and comfort of the patients. The department focuses on creating a supportive and compassionate environment, providing personalized care plans tailored to each patient's unique needs. Dr Burhanuddin is a young motivated head and neck surgeon with fellowships in head and neck surgical oncology after masters training in oral and maxillofacial surgery. He has worked at Tata Memorial Hospital, Mumbai as a Surgical fellow and also as research fellow for five years. He has been actively involved in exclusive surgical management, teaching, research and auditing of head and neck cancer during his training at the Tata Memorial Hospital, Mumbai.
Breast and uro-oncology surgery – Team of surgeons from Mumbai and Varanasi come on regular basis for surgery of carcinoma breast and uro-oncology.
Department of Pathology
Report on Pathology department
Three divisions make up the Pathology department and they work in unison with well-established academic practices that are the hallmark of TMH, Mumbai.

She has completed her MD pathology from VMMC and Safdarjung Hospital, New Delhi. She has an experience of about 5 years in her field. Currently she is working as Senior Resident in the department of onco-pathology in Tata Memorial Centre, Mumbai. She has expertise in histopathology, cytopathology, hematology and immunohistochemistry with special interest in onco-pathology. She has various research publications in international and Indian indexed journals.
Our onco-pathology labs is well equipped and currently we are processing all tissues and fluids for diagnosis. We will have our inhouse IHC and hematology (flowcytometry) facility in future.
I. Histopathology & cytopathology:
Services offered include histopathology, Immunohistochemistry and cytopathology.
The histopathology division is equipped with grossing station, electrical bone saw, bone decalcified, automated tissue processor, slide-stainer and Ventana immunostainer and Cyto-centrifuge.
Pathologists and staff members are periodically sent for training to Mahamana Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya Cancer Centre (MPMMCC), Varanasi.
Head & neck, breast, female genital tract, GI & hepatobiliary cancers and lymphomas and pediatric tumors constitute the bulk of the service load.
Surgical specimens are grossed and reported synoptically per TMH and CAP protocol so that they are meaningful from the point of view of therapy in accordance with standard protocols. There is emphasis on maintaining the turnaround time (TAT) so that patients do not suffer.
Like histopathology, cytopathology too, is reported per standard recommendations.
Postgraduate students from SKMCH are posted to the department for academic training. This is aided by discussion on the multi-head microscope.
The histopathology division, along with the NGS facility, is part of an ICMR-funded study on oral cancer.
II Department of Hematology
Though it is early days for all, this is especially true of the hematology division. Routine hematology, including CBC and coagulation studies, has recently been augmented with cytochemical testing for leukemia’s. Lab technologists who have been trained at HBCH, Varanasi, ensure that TAT is adhered to, and QC procedures are followed. Purchase of new equipment that would strengthen the division has been initiated. Even without them, however, leukemia cases are reported very fast on morphology, an exercise that represents the best use of what we currently have. Their accuracy and the constant dialog with the treating physicians ensures that therapeutic decisions can be initiated early, and lives saved. Special processing of leukemia samples so that they can be later taken up for molecular studies is under way. Residents, including junior residents from SKMH receive the best training here.
III. Clinical chemistry
Aside from routine parameters, this lab offers immunoassay and tumor marker services and serum and urine osmolality. Two senior Scientific Officers, trained in MPMMCC, Varanasi and HBCHRC, Mullanpur, Punjab, manage the services including quality control, both internal and external. Serum methotrexate level testing is soon to be started.
All in all, a department set to become the best, like all units of the parent institution TMH, Mumbai
NGS lab
Introduction: A molecular testing facility was established on July 2022 and initiated from November 2022 at Homi Bhabha Cancer Hospital & Research Centre (HBCHRC), Muzaffarpur, Bihar with the aim to provide molecular diagnostic service to patient as well as to develop clinical cancer research.
Purpose of the lab: Different molecular testing is ongoing. Purpose of these testing is to identify the genetic abnormalities driving the cancer of patients. If the detected abnormality has the available FDA-approved drug, then this type of treatment will provide better survival benefit of that patient compared to conventional anti-neoplastic drugs. Thus, the identified genetic alterations can provide valuable insights into the detection of the cause and behavior of the cancer, helping the oncologists to tailor treatment plans to individual patients.
About each test: Details of each testing are given below:
a) Next generation sequencing (NGS) of solid tumor and hereditary cancer -
A targeted panel of 72 genes with diagnostic, prognostic and therapeutic importance in solid tumor is currently used on Illumina platform to detect four different types of genetic abnormalities –single nucleotide variants (SNVs), fusion, insertion-deletion and copy number alterations.
- 232 cancer cases of HBCH&RC, MPMMCC and TMH have been tested
- Germline mutation detection in case of hereditary cancer is ongoing under code T008.
b) Mutation detection at single gene by RT-PCR method
Quantitative Real time- PCR based detection of genetic alterations of EGFR gene (test code F335), DPYD gene (code F336), BRAF gene (code F685), RAS isoforms (code F682) are ongoing.
- 58 cases have already been tested in this lab.
- The charge of this test is as per the SOC mentioned on TMC portal under each code.
Establishment of a tumor tissue repository
1525 tissue and blood in pair have been collected and stored with proper annotation.

BIOCHEMISTRY LABORATORY
About Us
The discipline of Clinical Biochemistry is an area in Chemistry, concerned with the analysis and diagnosis of various pathological conditions forming a way across patients and clinicians. This Laboratory at HBCH&RC became operational on the 21st Feb 2022. The lab is equipped with high throughput state of art auto-analyzers. The labs have been participating in internal and external quality assurance programs.
The services provided by the department include:
Department offers various laboratory services like clinical biochemistry, tumors markers and immunoassay. We have an extensive test menu of more than 100 assays. During the period 01.01.2023 to 31.12.2023, the laboratory performed 2,74,565 routine biochemistry tests on an average TAT of 03 hours and for emergency within 02 Hours along with 5,681 tumor markers and immunoassay. Department provides 13x7 (7AM - 8PM) laboratory services. We are further working towards the establishment of the special investigations like therapeutic drug monitoring services by HPLC and myeloma test services. The department is under the process of NABL accreditation.0
Research & Educational Activities:
The lab supports research and educational activities for the development and growth of employees.
- Refresher training for staffs is being conducted on regular basis for better knowledge and hands on experience on the analyzer.
- Seminars, in house discussions are conducted on a weekly basis.
- Various International & National Conference, Workshops, CME attended and Paper presented by staffs of Biochemistry Dept.
Department of Microbiology
Microbiology is essentially a response to clinical needs. Its importance lies in the form of diagnostic and therapeutic guidance.
The main functions of Microbiology lab in the hospital is in diagnosis of infection in individual patient and the other is to contribute in HAI prevention and control.
In near future, we are look forward to extend our services by initiating new tests at our center which is even more going to help in the timely and appropriate treatment of our patients.

Department of Preventive Oncology
Dr Ravikant has done his MBBS and MD (PSM) from Seth GSMC & KEM Hospital, Mumbai and currently working as Assistant professor Tata Memorial Centre, Mumbai under Department of Atomic Energy, Govt. of India since Nov 2019. He has founded Non-Profit Organisation “DOCTORS FOR YOU” in 2007. His work in public health sector workforce development for emergency response and multi drug resistance Tuberculosis in India is impeccable. Dr Ravikant is a member of Asian Disaster Reduction & Response Network (ADRRN). He is the first & only Indian to receive South Asian Association for Regional Corporation (SAARC) award for outstanding work in the aftermath of disasters in 2010.
Department of Preventive Oncology
She has completed her MBBS from RIMS, Ranchi and MS in obstetrics and gynecology from VMMC & Safdarjung Hospital, New Delhi and served as a senior resident for three years at Safdarjung Hospital. Worked as Assistant Professor at Sikkim Manipal Institute of Medical Sciences for three years and currently Heading Onco Gynec Unit at Homi Bhabha Cancer Hospital and Research centre, Muzaffarpur, Bihar. She is also leading the Cervical Cancer Screening & Early Detection Program in 14 Districts of Bihar and has multiple publications to her credit. She has done Sai Niwas health care colposcopy and preventive oncology course in October 2020.
Department of Palliative Care
Dr Kahkasha (MBBS, MD, Fellowship in palliative medicine)
Designation: Palliative Care, HBCH&RC, Muzaffarpur
She has ompleted MBBS and MD (Biochemistry) from JNMC, Aligarh. After completing her Senior Resident-ship from G B Pant PGIMER/MAMC, New Delhi she worked as Assistant Professor in Lady Hardinge Medical College, New Delhi and headed Biochemistry department at Balco Medical Centre, Raipur a tertiary cancer care centre from where Inspired by her mentor she moved to BBCI/TMH Guwahati and IPM Kozhikode for her fellowship in Palliative Medicine and has worked as Cipla's Home-based Palliative Care Physician. She has secured QI cohort status for TMH Muzaffarpur being run by Stanford India Quality Improvement Program 2021 as the Clinical Lead. She is working as an honorary Consultant of Palliative Medicine in TMH Muzaffarpur, Bihar. She will be taking forward the Palliative Care Program in 14 districts of Bihar on lines of the National Program for Palliative Care (NPPC)
Pain And Palliative Department
Department of Pain and Palliative Medicine plays a pivotal role in providing support to terminally ill cancer patients and their families, to improve the quality of life and alleviate the sufferings. We have both adult, geriatric, adolescent & Paediatric palliative care services, which has eventually become now the tertiary referral centre for part of entire Northern and Central Northern India. We also provide home based palliative care services and community based outreach Programme. OPD services include dedicated Comprehensive Pain clinic (availability of all transdermal, subcutaneous, oral, sublingual preparations of narcotics, subcutaneous syringe drivers for Interventional Pain management), Lymphoedema clinic (decompressive and manual massage therapy), Wound and stoma clinic (availability of all hydrogel, hydrocolloid and alginate dressing). Bereavement clinic (complicated grief, major depression), Geriatric and frailty clinic (dementia, frailty). Paediatric and Adolescent Palliative Medicine Department (HBCH campus) has dedicated OPD and IPD services. Teleconsultation based home care has been running successfully for 3 years that enrolled over thousands terminally ill cancer patients those are out stationed. We are doing research in palliative medicine jointly with many reputed institutions nationally and internationally. We also conduct regular CMEs, workshops for doctors, nurses, clinical psychologists, medical social workers, volunteers and KEVATs.
Dental Department
General dental services which include dental extractions, restorations, sharp tooth filing to prevent trauma to the oral soft tissues.
- Pre-radiation check-up and proving fluoride gel application and oral prophylaxis for prevention of radiation induced caries and post radiated sensitivity.
- Post radiation management of oral complications like xerostomia, mucositis and ulceration. Medical and surgical management of osteoradionecrosis (ORN).
- Management of oral complications for pre- and post-chemotherapy patients. Medical and surgical management of medication related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ).
- Maxillofacial Prosthetic rehabilitation in pre and post-surgical intervention cases which include intraoral and extraoral prostheses. At present, the department has managed to deliver, interim and definitive obturators, guide flange prosthesis, complete denture, removable partial denture, acrylic lip prosthesis, orbital prosthesis, facial prosthesis and brachytherapy applicators.

Pediatric Oncology
The Department provides care to Bihar and nearby states. Every kind of childhood cancers is treated on-site with surgery, radiation and chemotherapy as appropriate with acute leukemias making up a significant proportion of cases. We treat all pediatric solid tumors and have a dedicated pediatric oncology surgeon and orthopedic oncologist available on site, but brain tumors are rarely seen as we lack an on-site neurosurgeon.
