In order to advance knowledge, and promote health, research projects relevant to the Prevention and Early Detection of Head & Neck, Breast and Cervical Cancer are conducted. Currently, the department is engaged in the following research projects:

  • 'Early Detection of Women's Cancers in India'- A cluster randomized controlled study for the early detection of breast and cervix cancer by primary health care workers, using simple and cheap technology. This study involving 1,50,000 women belonging to low-socio-economic groups in Mumbai, is supported by a RO1 grant from the NIH (National Institute of Health), USA.
  • 'Evaluation of the Comparative Efficacy of VIA, Conventional Cytology and HPV detection by Hybrid Capture technique, for the screening of cervical cancer'- A cluster randomized study to compare three different screening tests for cervical cancer, is being conducted at the rural Osmanabad district of Maharashtra. This study involving 1,60,000 women is funded by a grant from the 'Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation' through the WHO- IARC (International Agency for Research in Cancer), Lyon, France.
  • 'Global Youth Tobacco Survey'- This survey involving the 8th 9th and 10th grade students of 12,700 schools in the State of Maharashtra is being conducted under the aegis of WHO-TFI (Tobacco Free Initiative) 'Global School Personnel Survey'- This survey involving 12,700 schools in the State of Maharashtra is also being conducted under the aegis of the WHO-TFI.

The department actively collaborates with the TIFR (Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Mumbai), DGHS (Directorate General of Health Services) Govt. of India and ICMR (Indian Council of Medical Research).
