Academic Activity:

The Department conducted its first workshop on oncological Reconstruction with cadaveric flap dissection course for 25 delegates in December 2010 under the banner ONCORECON. After that, the department is conducting similar workshop with live surgery demonstration and hands on cadaveric flap dissection course on a monthly basis. The numbers of delegates are restricted to four per course to have better interaction and also dissect each flap individually. Number of national and local faculties are attending and supervising this course. This course had a good response and is appreciated very much by the delegates- both practicing plastic surgeons and post-graduate students.

Symposium on Saturdays.

The Dept. admits 1 fellow (2 year course) and 2 Specialist Registrars (1 year course) every year. They are qualified plastic surgeons selected after preliminary examination of national level followed by interview. Once selected, they are allowed to assist in the theatres from the day one. At the end of one year, each fellow would have independently done 25- 30 free tissue transfers. They are allowed to participate and present papers in the national & International conferences and the same will be funded by the institution. Apart from this, the department is also visited by observers - both national & International, for a period between 15 days to 3 months. In the last 5 years, 46 candidates have come for Observership. The department is in the process of extending our fellowship from the current period of 2 years to 3 years. After completing 2 years at our centre the fellow can visit another institute for 6 months. After that, he/she will come back and work in our unit for the remaining 6 months, so that he/ she can share the experience of that centre. This will allow the fellows/ trainees to have different way of thinking and broaden their exposure of different ways of management of the same defect. This will definitely provide an opportunity to acquire international contacts and share their experience. This will also enable us to have joint projects by the institutes.
