The Department has just installed the state-of-the-art, high field strength 1.5 tesla Signa Echospeed MRI System, with attached Advantage Workstation. MR imaging is of great value for the brain and spine, with excellent differentiation of grey and white matter, normal and abnormal tissues. It has also proved to be of value in the head and neck regions and for evaluation of the musculo-skeletal system and joints. It depicts changes in bone marrow with great clarity. MR imaging of abdominal and pelvic organs can also provide useful information regarding characterization, staging and operability of tumours in selected cases. In addition to routine imaging, the Signa Echospeed system has the following capabilities:
Ultrafast imaging sequences, to reduce scan time and motion artefacts.
Single breath-hold imaging, useful for abdominal scanning.
MR Angiography, a non-invasive method of visualizing arteries and / or veins in the head, neck, trunk and extremities.
MR Cholangiopancreatography, a non-invasive method for depicting the biliary tree, pancreatic duct and gall bladder. It is most helpful in cases of obstructive jaundice.
Diffusion imaging, helpful for detecting early brain infarcts.
Functional imaging, useful for pre-surgical mapping of brain centres eg. motor, visual, speech centres.
MR Spectroscopy (Hydrogen and Phosphorus). This is a non-invasive method of measuring the levels of certain metabolites in body tissues and organs, which helps in diagnosis of tumours, and differentiation from other conditions like infarcts, infective and degenerative lesions.
