XXI ANNUAL CONFERENCE

EVIDENCE BASED MANAGEMENT OF CANCERS IN INDIA 2023

CONFERENCE WORKSHOPS

VIRTUAL  WORKSHOP PROGRAM                                        HANDS - ON WORKSHOP PROGRAM

Genome Wide association studies: Design, conduct and analysis

Genome Wide association studies (GWAS) provide an opportunity to understand genetic susceptibility to chronic diseases and the genetic basis of complex diseases. So far, around 450 genetic variants associated with increased risk of cancer at various sites have been discovered. GWAS studies have started to provide insight for screening of high-risk individuals by identifying them on the basis of genetic risk scores.  The targeted genes identified by GWAS studies have been demonstrated to be the subject of somatic mutations reflecting the driver activity of GWAS identified SNPs.

Thus, these studies have great potential in identifying risk loci and offer prospects of maximizing drug discovery efforts.  GWAS data are also being used to identify nongenetic risk factors and possible chemoprevention agents using Mendelian Randomization approach. So far, there has been limited GWAS research from India. Centre for Cancer Epidemiology, Tata Memorial Centre, Mumbai has undertaken GWAS studies for common cancer sites.

The workshop will discuss design of GWAS studies, how to perform them in the laboratory and analysis of GWAS data.

Simplifying practice and adoption of colposcopy & pre cancer management in public health care settings

Colposcopy remains an important component of the cervical cancer screening  programs as  a  triaging tool  for investigation of screen-positive women, irrespective of the primary screening test. Colposcopy, if available in health services, is the best option to direct biopsies in order to confirm diagnosis, correlate with the severity of clinical disease and guide management of cervical pre cancers. Awell-trained colposcopist can understand the technical, interpretive aspects of Colposcopic findings and can recommend suitable contextual management plans.

This workshop is intended  to simplify the learning of Colposcopy and cervical pre-cancer management. Step by step individual hands on training, Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) and demonstration of procedures will be provided for participants in the  Department of Preventive Oncology at  Tata Memorial Hospital, Mumbai.
