With changes in life style, Indian subcontinent is experiencing surge in Cancer Incidence with main contributions by Oral, Breast and cervix cancer. As rightly said by many oncology experts; the best way to fight cancer is only through early detection. As basic information about cancer increases the chances of getting detected in early stages and decreased expenses on treatment with increase in chances of survival.

With this vision, the Department of Preventive Oncology was established at HBCH. As few cancers can be detected in precancerous stages and with proper treatment we can cure it and prevent mortality.

To achieve these Goals, Department of Preventing Oncology is mainly concerned with:

    • Dispersal of particulars, facts and figures related with cancer by unit called ‘Population Based Cancer registry (PBCR)’. • Per week 6 days working OPD in Civil Hospital Campus, provide basic screening services to population free of cost. In this Screening for Oral, Breast and Cervix cancer is done by trained doctors. The methods which are used are Visual Oral Examination, Clinical breast examination, Visual inspection of Cevix by application of Acetic Acid and Lugol’s Iodine.

    • Manpower training and education is provided for early detection of common cancers to medical practioners, Govt. medical Officers, ASHAs and ANMs.

Homi Bhabha Cancer Hospital, Sangrur was recognised as a Model hospital for Cancer care under the Hub and Spoke Model of Tata Memorial Centre by Parliamentary Committee.

A parliamentary panel has urged the government to upgrade the infrastructure for cancer treatment and make it affordable by enlarging the network of a leading healthcare institute, as it expressed concern over nearly two-thirds of the patients dying in the country.

The parliamentary standing committee on science and technology, environment, forest and climate change submitted its report on “an expanded role for the department of atomic energy in cancer treatment in India through an enlarged network of the Tata Memorial Centre (TMC) in Mumbai”.

The report was submitted by the panel members, including Chairman Jairam Ramesh, to Rajya Sabha Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu on Monday, the upper house secretariat said in a statement

The panel has recommended to set up a hub and spoke model under the Tata Memorial Centre, which is the leader in cancer treatment and is supported by the Department of Atomic Energy. “It (committee) recommended wider adoption of ‘Hub and Spoke’ model proposed by Tata Memorial Centre (TMC) across the country,” the statement said.

“TMC has proposed that common and less complex cancer care facilities should be provided close to patients’ homes (spoke) to create minimum disruption in their lives and that of their families.”

As per the report, the treatment of uncommon cancers and those with complex treatment protocols can be provided by the expert centres of excellence (hubs).
