Homi Bhabha Cancer Hospital, Sangrur is a joint venture of Tata Memorial Centre, Mumbai and Govt. of Punjab. This hospital was started functioning since January – 2015 inside the civil hospital campus, Sangrur with an aim to provide the best quality of care and cancer treatment facilities in all aspects in an affordable cost to the patients of the Punjab and nearby states. In support of Punjab Govt., & TMC, Mumbai this unit is having not only the trained manpower like Doctors, Nursing & other paramedical staff but also high end equipment like Linear Accelerator, Bhabhatron, 18 channel Brachy, High Bore CT, 1.5 Tesla MRI, Digital Mammography, Digital X-ray, Mobile X-ray(Digital), Higher end USG, Mobile USG for diagnosis. This hospital has been upgraded to 100 bedded facility during November – 2018 and inaugurated by Captn. Amarinder Singh, Honble Chief Minister, Punjab. So far, more than 15000 no. of patients are registered by HBCH, Sangrur. More than 1.5 lakh pathological investigations are conducted in one year. In this rural centre, we are also doing investigation like frozen section, immune histochemistry. We want to add digital slide scanner in recent future, so that we can easily share the slides to other facilities for reference and study purpose. In addition to above, one prevention programme i.e, Early Detection for Oral, Breast & Cervical Cancer has already been started during the month of November 2018 in the district Sangrur & Bhawanigarh. This facility is enrolled with Mukh Mantri Punjab Cancer Rahat Kosh Scheme (MMPCRKS) and Ayushman Bharat Scheme to extend the financial support to the patients during treatment. More over medications were provided to the patients at subsidized rate i.e, 60% less than MRP. Side by side various BSc courses like MLT, Radiotherapy, MRIT, OT Tech., Anesthesia Tech., ICU Tech., Post Basic Diploma in Oncology Nursing & MSc. Histopathology are running in order to share knowledge among the local population and to strengthen the facility. HBCH, Sangrur is an affiliated institute by Baba Farid Universith of Health Sciences, Faridkot and declared as authorised training centre for Oncology related disciplines. HBCH, Sangrur is an IT based facility running with paperless activities. Smart card was introduced for cash less transaction and online access to patients for the reports from anywhere in India. It is my immense pleasure to appraise that HBCH, Sangrur will soon come up with advanced medical technology in the form of Interventional Radiology, PET - CT and SPECT - CT in this region at an affordable cost. We are going to have one more State of the Art Linear Accelerator to treat Cancer patients with advanced technology. Separate hostel for Boys and Girls are under construction. Homi Bhabha Cancer Hospital & Research Centre, Mullanpur, a 350 bedded cancer hospital under the banner Tata Memorial Centre, Mumbai will be commissioned by the end of year 2020. This will be region’s first comprehensive Cancer Hospital with all the facilities under one roof. It is located in the campus of District Civil Hospital Sangrur, Punjab. This hospital has been commissioned in January 2015 and so far registered about 15000 patients . Recently in March 2020 we have started Ayushman Bharat scheme and it was inaugurated by Honourable Health Minister Sir along with Honourable PWD Minister sir. Hospital facility was upgraded from 30 beds to 100 beds and new Surgical Block was inaugurated by Honourable Chief Minister Capt. Amarinder Singh, Punjab on Nov 12, 2018. STARTING OF INTERVENTIONAL RADIOLOGY SERVICES AT HBCH SANGRUR:-Homi Bhabha Cancer Hospital (A Unit of Tata Memorial Centre Mumbai, Under Department of Atomic Energy, DAE) is proud to announce the starting of Interventional Radiology services at Homi Bhabha Cancer Hospital, Sangrur.." This is first of its kind Interventional Radiology service being offered in a rural cancer centre and second in the state of Punjab after PGI Chandigarh. This will be of immense benefit to patients from Punjab & neighboring states who require such high end services. The Interventional Radiology services have already started functioning and around 4 to 5 Non- vascular cases including PTBD (Percutaneous Transhepatic Biliary Drainage), PCN (Percutaneous Nephrostomy) and Biliary & Ureteric stenting are done per week and two vascular cases, TACI (Tans arterial Chemo Infusion) have already being done successfully. Other procedures are also planned in the coming weeks. DEPARTMENT OF SURGICAL ONCOLOGY AND HEAD/NECK ONCOLOGY:-A well equipped department and a skilled team has made is feasible to perform a variety of surgical procedures that include cancer sites from Head & Neck, Breast, Gynecological, Gastrointestinal, Urological, Soft tissue and skin. Till date 2500 major surgeries were performed. From mid of year 2019, a dedicated Bone tumor related OPD Was started and complicated bone tumor related procedures Performed. Such a dedicated Bone tumor management Available at few centres only in Punjab and adjoining states. We abide by strict protocol and evidence based medicine to get the best outcomes for our patients.
DEPARTMENT OF MEDICAL ONCOLOGY :-The Medical Oncology Department at HBCH Sangrur started its services in January 2015. We have gradually picked up in terms of number of patients treated as well as the varieties of malignancies treated. Around 120- 130 patients visit the medical oncology outpatient clinic daily. More than 12000 chemotherapy in administered per year. Our OPD services run daily from Monday to Saturday. Day care runs from 9 am to 7 pm on Monday to Saturday. Chemotherapy is administered in the 24 bedded day care facility of the hospital. We also have inpatient facility at our hospital. We have facilities for treatment of Head & Neck, Breast, Oesophagus, Lung, and Gastro-intestinal, Gynaecological and Urological malignancies, Soft tissue sarcomas and Bone tumours. Among Haematological malignancies, we treat multiple Myeloma, Hodgkin’s lymphoma, Non Hodgkin’s lymphoma, CML and CLL. We offer both intravenous and oral chemotherapies and monoclonal antibodies. We deliver Neo adjuvant, concurrent, adjuvant, palliative Chemotherapy. Apart from Chemotherapy latest targeted therapy, immunotherapy, hormonal therapy, metronomic therapy is also being administered here. Apart from patient care we are giving family counselling, palliative counselling, pain management and even screening to patients. We provide holistic care to patients taking care of their physical, mental, social, psychological, sexual, familial issue. We also provide second opinion to patients being treated at other hospital. Most of the patients are treated on cashless system under the Punjab Mukhya Mantri Rahat Kosh Cancer Scheme, PM relief fund support, women and child welfare scheme, internal support to poor sick patients from TMH funds and Ayushman Bharat Scheme. DEPARTMENT OF RADIATION ONCOLOGY :-Radiation Oncology is an advanced branch of modern cancer treatment, which is painless and incision less. DEPARTMENT OF RADIO-DIAGNOSIS AND IMAGING:-The Department of Radio-diagnosis is well equipped with advanced imaging modalities required to cater the need of Diagnostic as well as Intervention purposes.
In this way, the radiology department caters the various diagnostic procedures required for optimum diagnosis and treatment of various cancers. All the reports are available in the Electronic Medical Records (EMR). Department of Anaesthesia Critical Care and Pain Management:-The Department of Anaesthesia comprises of the Anaesthesia Service, the Intensive Care Unit and the Pain Service managed by five consultant anaesthetists and four residents including one fellow The department has well trained faculty who have expertise in the anaesthetic management of major oncosurgeries, pre and post operative care including pain therapy and intensive care of cancer patients. The department has a strong academic inclination. We have recently introduced a one year fellowship program under the aegis of TMC, Mumbai and aim to introduce MD Anaesthesia course in the near future. INTENSIVE CARE UNIT The Intensive Care Unit consists of a 10 bedded critical care and a 3 bedded recovery room/step down unit. The unit has 24 hour coverage by a consultant and a senior resident. Patients include post-operative surgical and critically ill with problems like Septic shock, ARDS, and multi-organ failure, many having acute haemodynamic, respiratory and metabolic derangements. The unit is equipped with well trained intensivists and state of the art amenities to provide the entire range of intensive care services including airway management, mechanical ventilation, circulatory support including advanced haemodynamic monitoring and other supportive measures.. ANAESTHESIA SERVICES The Anesthesia service is involved with pre-operative anaesthetic evaluation and the peri-operative management of patients undergoing cancer surgery in the operation theatre complex for routine and emergency procedures, as well as in peripheral areas including paediatric radiotherapy, brachytherapy, endoscopy and interventional radiology suite. Our operating rooms include 04 theatres for major and 01 for minor surgical procedures. In last 5 years, we have administered anaesthesia to over 5000 patients. Operation theatres have been equipped with state of art imported equipment that includes Anaesthesia monitoring system (DRAGER), Anaesthesia delivery system, 3 Ventilators, 2 bipap machines, 2 HFNO machines, fiber optic video bronchoscopy and video laryngoscope, and portable USG, ECG machine, C-arm and X-Ray Machine. Major surgeries at our center include upper & lower GI surgery, hepato biliary surgeries, cyto reductive surgeries, radical cystectomy, hemipelvectomy, limb salvage surgery, major head and neck surgeries include laryngectomy, composite resections with reconstruction. PAIN SERVICES The Pain Service looks after Acute Pain Management and Chronic Cancer Pain and palliative care. Acute pain service looks after post-operative pain after major surgeries and all other acute and acute on chronic pain conditions. Epidural analgesia and Patient Controlled Analgesia (PCA) are employed to relieve pain. Chronic cancer pain is managed using multi modal approaches which include pharmacological management and interventional procedures. Faculty:
DEPARTMENT OF PATHOLOGY:-HBCH Department of Pathology is a well equipped with all the equipments required for doing Biochemistry, Haematological, Serological, Cytological, Immunological and Histopathological tests pertaining to cancer diagnosis and treatment. The department performs more than 1.5 lac tests per year. All the reports are available online for review on electronic medical records system. We have fully automated state of art equipments which include:
Microscopic examination and analysis of blood, body fluids (e.g., urine, peritoneal fluid, cerebrospinal fluid), histopathology, bone marrow etc is done by expert pathologists. The Department of Pathology is committed to provide the best possible support for clinical management of cancer patients using contemporary Laboratory techniques meeting the highest standards of Ethical practice.
DEPARTMENT OF PREVENTIVE ONCOLOGYWith changes in life style, Indian subcontinent is experiencing surge in Cancer Incidence with main contributions by Oral, Breast and cervix cancer. As rightly said by many oncology experts; the best way to fight cancer is only through early detection. As basic information about cancer increases the chances of getting detected in early stages and decreased expenses on treatment with increase in chances of survival. With this vision, the Department of Preventive Oncology was established at HBCH. As few cancers can be detected in precancerous stages and with proper treatment we can cure it and prevent mortality. DEPARTMENT OF DIETETICS AND NUTRITIONHospital dietary department is responsible for providing meals and nutritional care and counseling. OBJECTIVES:
The Dietary Department perform two major activities that is 1. Nutritional care of patients 2. Food service management. DEPARTMENT OF NURSINGAs part of HBCH commitment to patient centred care, the nursing department is actively involved in quality improvement focusing on measuring and improving patient outcome. The nursing department included 65 nurses, nurse specialist such as Central Venous Access Device (CVAD) nurse, Enterostomal therapist and 1 Nurse Educator. They are responsible for delivering highest quality cancer care to patients. CVAD Clinic: With specialist Nurse in CVAD clinic 64 PICC line insertions were performed and a total of 552 patients were counselled and educated in dressing and flushing of central line catheters. DISPENSARY:We have our own pharmacy where all quality surgical,chemotherapeutic items and other consumable are available at subsidized rates. Dispensary services are totally cashless.We have sold medicine to patients at very subside cost. DEPARTMENT OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY:Fully backed with specially trained IT personnel, Department of Information technology allows health care providers to collect, store, retrieve, and transfer information electronically.

Inaugural programme of Ayushman Bharat Scheme at HBCH, Sangrur Ayushman Bharat - Sarbat Sehat Bima Yojana (AB-SSBY), a flagship state health insurance scheme for the beneficiaries of State of Punjab. AB-SSBY will provide financial protection to 75% population of state of Punjab. It is entitlement based cashless health insurance cover of Rs. 5 Lakh per family per year. Under this scheme, cashless and paperless treatment is available at government and empanelled private hospitals. FUTURE PLAN:
Tata Memorial Centres Punjab State cancer care model to be adopted in country: Parliamentary Committee recommendation. Homi Bhabha Cancer Hospital, Sangrur was recognised as a Model hospital for Cancer care under the Hub and Spoke Model of Tata Memorial Centre by Parliamentary Committee. A parliamentary panel has urged the government to upgrade the infrastructure for cancer treatment and make it affordable by enlarging the network of a leading healthcare institute, as it expressed concern over nearly two-thirds of the patients dying in the country. The parliamentary standing committee on science and technology, environment, forest and climate change submitted its report on “an expanded role for the department of atomic energy in cancer treatment in India through an enlarged network of the Tata Memorial Centre (TMC) in Mumbai”. The report was submitted by the panel members, including Chairman Jairam Ramesh, to Rajya Sabha Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu on Monday, the upper house secretariat said in a statement The panel has recommended to set up a hub and spoke model under the Tata Memorial Centre, which is the leader in cancer treatment and is supported by the Department of Atomic Energy. “It (committee) recommended wider adoption of ‘Hub and Spoke’ model proposed by Tata Memorial Centre (TMC) across the country,” the statement said. “TMC has proposed that common and less complex cancer care facilities should be provided close to patients’ homes (spoke) to create minimum disruption in their lives and that of their families.” As per the report, the treatment of uncommon cancers and those with complex treatment protocols can be provided by the expert centres of excellence (hubs). |
