The Department of Medicine provides a broad range of services for patients at the Tata Memorial Center. These include both inpatient and outpatient services.

The department  meets the needs of patients with acute complications, including infections, pulmonary complications, cardiovascular disease and metabolic disorders.   We provide an inpatient consultation service for management of medical illnesses of patients undergoing surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy .

Complex surgical patients are attended to at our  clinic where potential medical risk factors for  surgery can be identified and their risk for surgery is estimated . Patients are then optimized prior to surgery whenever possible. Out patient consultations are also provided to patients who have medical illnesses such as diabetes or heart disease that require specialized management during their course of cancer treatment. The faculty provides referral consultations to the intensive care unit and to the step down units.

On an average 12,000 consultations are carried out annually by the department.

  3. Cardiomyopathy  Clinic: Patients diagnosed with cardiac dysfunction following chemotherapy and radiotherapy are registerd and are offered long term treatment.
  1. Cardiorespiratory risk assessment: With the help of an oxygen consumption meter to evaluate VO2 Max and a simultaneous cardiac stress evaluation  a comprehensive cardiorespiratory risk assessment is done for high risk lung cancer patients .

  2. Computerized stress test : This is used to evaluate cardiac  patients  for reversible ischaemia and to evaluate functional capacity.

  3. Echocardiography : A state of the art 3-D echocardiography machine is available for transthoracic ,transesophageal echocardiography. Annually about 5000 echocardiographies are carried out. In addition we have a portable unit to conduct emergency bedside 2Decho in the intensive care unit .

Pulmonary Function Testing  laboratory: A state of the art Pulmonary function unit  is available for complete  spirometry, as well as diffusing capacity. On an average about 2000 PFTs are carried out annually  The main patient load being   pre and post op Lung cancer patients, follow up of patients who have received  Bleomycin , breast cancer patients receiving radiotherapy

  5. Electrocardiography: About 16,000 ECGs are carried out each year.

Ongoing projects :

  1. Evaluation of the cardiotoxicity of anthracyclines by echocardiography in breast cancer patients.

  2. Evalution of late cardiotoxicity due to anthracyclines in childhood survivors of cancer.

  3. Study of clinical profile and molecular studies of HIV related lymphomas.

  4. Thrombophilia profile of  patients with cancer and thrombosis.
