FAQs for Sending Samples to Tata Memorial Hospital Laboratory for Covid-19 Testing

1.Does TMH offer testing to detect the presence of the 2019 novel coronavirus?
Yes. Please note that TMH’s Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) testing is available for admitted patients only. The test detects the presence of the underlying virus (SARS-CoV-2) that causes COVID-19 and is for use with patients who meet current guidelines for evaluation of infection with COVID-19. 2.What is the test methodology for COVID-19 testing used by TMH?
The COVID-19 tests performed by TMH is qualitative assays using PCR technology.
3.Who can order TMH COVID-19 testing?
Testing can be ordered by qualified physicians for inpatients only. TMH is open to accepting samples of Patients admitted in all Hospitals and Nursing Homes in Mumbai and Navi Mumbai
4.What are acceptable samples types for 2019 Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) testing?
Oropharyngeal (OP) & Nasopharyngeal (NP) swabs collected in Viral Transport Medium.
5.What are the Sample Acceptance Timings at TMH?
Currently, we accept samples between 9:15am and 5:30pm
6.Where do I contact for depositing or sending sample?

7.What to do if I do not have the Viral Transport Medium?
In case of unavailability of swabs and VTM, the requesting entity can collect Two swabs and one Viral Transport Medium from TMH (Visit Annexe Bldg, Covid Sample Acceptance Counter, Tata Memorial Hospital, Mumbai or call on 022 2417 7000 Ext: 4402).
8.How should samples be collected ?

9.How should samples be transported ?
Please refer to the Guidelines for Sample Transportation
10.How do I get the Sample Requisition Form?
The Sample Requisition Form prescribed by ICMR is mandatory to be filled completely and sent along with the sample. The Sample Requisition Form (SRF)- ICMR can be downloaded here.
11.How long will it take TMH to report results back?
The report will be informed to the treating physician by email mentioned in the Sample Requisition Form within 24 hours. No report will be informed to the patient or any relative by phone or by email. If in case the report is not available in 24 hours, the Treating physician will be informed about the delay in reporting.
12.Are there any conditions when the sample will not be accepted?
Yes, the sample will be rejected under conditions mentioned in the Sample Rejection Criteria document.
13.Can the patient come for giving sample?
No. As we can accept samples of admitted Patients only, the Patient cannot and should not come to TMH along with the sample.
14.If the hospital /doctor does not have required packaging material?
TMH cannot provide any packaging material. Sample has to be sent in 3 layer package as described in the Guidelines for Sample Transportation, else sample will not be accepted.
15.Will positive COVID-19 results be reported to local and state public health entities?
Yes, TMH will report positive COVID-19 results to ICMR and State Govt. authorities.
16.Does a negative result from TMH testing for COVID-19 mean that a patient is definitely not infected?
Not necessarily. TMH testing for COVID-19 detects the virus directly, within the established limits of detection for which it was validated. A positive result is considered definitive evidence of infection. However, a negative result does not definitively rule out infection.
