Department
of Transfusion Medicine's mission is to supply adequate quantity
of safe blood and blood components to all patients in need.
The centre is licensed by Drug Controller India and is a member
of Federation of Bombay Blood Banks as well as American Association
of Blood Banks.

The blood is collected only from voluntary non-remunerated
donors and relatives or friends of patients in need of blood.
All blood undergoes testing for Hepatitis B & C, HIV and VDRL
before being issued for transfusion. The centre is recognized
as Zonal Blood Transfusion Centre by National AIDS Control
Organization and carries out HIV testing for 9 other blood
banks. To ensure reliability of HIV testing, the center participates
in Model Performance Evaluation Programme of CDC Atlanta.
All laboratories as well as component production undergoes
internal quality control. Facilities for histocompatibility
testing is provided to potential Bone Marrow Transplant recipients.
The
blood is separated mainly in 3 components, Red cells, Platelets
and Fresh Frozen Plasma. Cryoprecipitate is prepared as per
need. The Single Donor Platelets are also collected with use
of cell separator machine.
Bone Marrow Transplant patients are provided
a full blood transfusion support with all components which
are irradiated. Leukocyte depletion filters are in use for
patients who can afford them. The blood and blood components
are supplied also to patients in hospitals other than TMH.
