Nursing at Tata Memorial Centre - Widening horizons-improving practice

The nursing practice at Tata Memorial Centre is rewarding, challenging and growth opportunities are abundant. We believe that caring is the foundation and a critical component of nursing. It can be accomplished with wisdom, knowledge, compassion and competence. Our nurses work in an environment that encourages professionalism responsibility and expertise in caring for the patients in our care, a collaborative relationship with the multidisciplinary team.

Nurses at Tata Memorial Centre aim to lead best practice in cancer and palliative care nationally and internationally. We recognize the complex needs of every cancer individual affected by cancer. The intent is to guide good practice while actively encouraging innovation at ward or unit levels.

The nursing environment includes inpatient Departments of Surgical Oncology , (both adult and pediatric) Radiation Oncology, Intensive Care nursing, Medical Oncology units, diagnostic studies and palliative nursing. We also give Casualty Services and Chemotherapy Day Care Services.

Specialist nurses

We Specialist nurses roles in nursing work which work in central venous access clinics, infection control, breast cancer, critical care, Head and neck cancer and palliative care We have introduced research in  nursing to meet with the objectives of our institution for evidence based management. These new roles aim to improve the quality of care to patients and their families. The special courses are run once a year and there is enthusiastic participation from the nurses across the country.

Educational Opportunities.

Nursing staff education is carried out throughout the year by in-service and continuing education programmes.

The Diploma in Oncology nursing is offered once a year is affiliated to State Nursing Council. The course is for a period of 11 months starting from 1st of July. The program aims to train students fully ground in theory and practice of oncology including exposure to teaching, administration and research. 

Tata Memorial Centre deputes nurses for higher education in specializations in nursing to skeep abreast with the technologies.

Nursing Orientation

All new nursing employees participate in an induction and orientation programme designed to give all new nurses a basic foundation in cancer and palliative care as well as an overview of the policies and functioning of the hospital.

Professional Development

Tata Memorial Centre administration believes in the development of its employees and hence the nurses are also deputed for various conferences and seminars across the country. Our nurses have also won fellowship from UICC and we have been accepted as the host country for International Oncology Nursing Fellowship

ONCOLOGY NURSES ASSOCIATION OF INDIA

The professional association “Oncology Nurses Association of India” has been formed in  November 1994 at Tata Memorial hospital . The aims and objectives of the association are

  1. To bring together the disciplines of Oncology nurses  towards the betterment of Cancer care.
  2. To standardize the current practice of Oncology nursing in the country.
  3. To encourage the advancement of education in Cancer nursing.
  4. To serve as a link for other regional and local organizations that influence the development of Oncology nursing.

ACTIVITIES OF THE ASSOCIATION

  1. Publication of quarterly newsletter termed “ Oncology Nursing Newsletter”.
  2. Conducting of yearly or biennial conferences.
  3. Annual general body meetings and submission of reports

EDUCATIONAL

Cancer awareness programmes at various institutions to spread knowledge in view of preparation of  Nurses . Various competitions  of both curricular and extra curricular in nature are held regularly.

AWARDS

  1. ONAI presents awards to top two scorers in Oncology nursing and two clinical nurses. 
  2. Either in Tata hospital or outside.
  3. Peer group review awards are selected by their own friends and given prizes.
  4. ONAI scholarships are presented to deserving candidates.
  5. Research funds are also planned for Oncology nursing research studies.
