Respiratory

Treatment is aimed towards improved oxygen transport and tissue metabolism along with maintenance of cardio-pulmonary haemodynamics and preservation of overall functional status (neurological and musculo-skeletal)
Almost all patients going in for major surgeries are treated pre operatively and post operatively to minimize post operative complications and thus assist early recovery. Techniques used are pre and post operative breathing exercises, use of proprioceptive feedback techniques, Postural drainage & general exercises.

Breast

Following surgery of the breast, it is important to restore pain free movements at the shoulder joint. The therapist implements early exercise programs and care of the arm to enable the patient return to valued life activities.

Lymphedema, a complication that may occur following surgery or radiation is treated by appropriate exercises & pressure garments. A multi sequential pump is used when indicated.

We provide exclusive breast prosthesis (see prosthesis) made in the Rehabilitation and Research department.

Head & Neck

Areas of major concern are deglutition, self-care consideration and minimizing functional and cosmetic deformity.

The physiotherapist can advise you on early exercise programs to prevent stiffness of affected joints and improve strength. Exercises are taught depending on the exact nature of the surgery performed and are usually started a few days after surgery.

Trismus (inability to open the mouth) is a complication that may occur following surgery or radiation. It can be prevented /treated by means of jaw stretching exercises.

Bone & Soft Tissue

Rehabilitation involves assessment, management and treatment of patients with musculo-skeletal and neurological problems. This includes analysis of movement, based on the structure and function of the body, re- education and strengthening of muscles, sitting and standing balance, gait training, stair climbing exercises and other activities of daily living.

We offer appropriate artificial limbs and other supportive appliances at cost effective prices.

Chemotherapy & Radiotherapy.

Strength, endurance and range of motion are reduced during prolonged periods of chemotherapy and radiotherapy.

Suitable isometric and isotonic exercises, specially designed spinal braces, splints, aids and supportive orthosis help in functional restoration, mobility, pain relief and assist in independent living.

Special counseling is given to cancer patients on use of vaginal dilator to remedy the vaginal stenosis after radiation.

In Pediatric conditions especially leukemia and Hodgkin's disease, remedial interventions are given to overcome neuro-psychological differences, learning problems and incidental psychological stress.

Pain

Pain is a major factor which causes distress to the patient. Pain may be due to oedema, stiff joints, weakness of muscles, faulty posture etc.

These are treated with exercises and different modalities such as: Infrared rays, Electrical stimulation, Transcutaneous nerve stimulation and cold packs.

Palliative Care

The major problems of patients receiving palliative treatment are pain and depression, difficulty in movements, and debility.

Personal care activity and group activities are employed for physical and psychological benefits.

Energy conservation and relaxation techniques, yoga and therapeutic recreational activities help debility. Home visits are also conducted at regular intervals.
